Mayor Richetelli Releases Statement Regarding the Silver Sands/Walnut Beach Boardwalk Project

Richetelli expresses gratitude to Governor Rell for Directing State Agencies to Move Forward and Honor Approvals for the Project; Additional Construction Jobs Anticipated.

Milford, CT, July 10, 2009:  One day after making a public appeal for the continuation of the Silver Sands/Walnut Beach Boardwalk project, Mayor James L. Richetelli, Jr. learned late Friday that Governor M. Jodi Rell had directed state officials to move forward with the project.

“On behalf of the citizens of Milford, I wish to express my gratitude to Governor Rell for allowing the project to move forward,” Mayor Richetelli said.  The proposed boardwalk project crosses over state property at Silver Sands State Park and city property at Walnut Beach.  Of the $2 million approved by the state Bond Commission, more than $244,000 has been spent so far, mostly for engineering work.

““It makes economic sense for it to move forward,” Mayor Richetelli said.  “The project is funded and it is shovel-ready.  This will put people in construction back to work.  And, perhaps most significantly, it will be a boost to the small business owners in the Walnut Beach and Silver Sands areas.”

In addition, Mayor Richetelli noted that the boardwalk would provide “all the citizens of Connecticut with the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Milford shoreline and the natural resources of Long Island Sound.”

Mayor Richetelli said he truly appreciates the Governor’s hard work to address the State’s financial crisis.  “This is not a case of spending for the sake of spending.  In this instance, the project is able to move forward because of careful planning, prudent use of financial resources, and the Governor’s decision to honor approvals already in place for the project.”
