On 3/21/08 at 2151 hours, the Milford Police Department received a complaint from the Westfield Shopping Mall Security regarding a vehicle that was operating recklessly in the parking lot. Responding Officers arrived and were informed that a large group of teenagers had been previously gathering in the area of the mall. The location they were congregating at was an ad-hoc memorial site, created by family and friends of three local teens who had died as a result of a one-vehicle crash that occurred on February 11, 2008. The group of teens indicated they were just hanging around the memorial site. Shortly after, security personnel observed vehicles in the rear-parking garage spinning their tires and operating in a reckless manner. Security personnel then responded back to the memorial site where a
group of teens in vehicles were gathered. At this time, security personnel observed a green colored Ford Mustang spinning its tires and operating recklessly on the travel road known as Mall Ring Road. The incident was also viewed on the mall’s video surveillance system by investigators. The video shows a large cloud of smoke coming from the rear of this vehicle, creating unsafe operating conditions for another vehicle that was immediately passing in the opposite direction and other vehicles afterwards. The investigating officer located the vehicle, identifying the operator as a Youthful Offender (17) who resides in Milford, Connecticut. An arrest warrant was issued for the Youthful Offender and served on 3/27/08, charging the youth with Reckless Driving. The youth was released on a promise to appear and given a court date of 4/16/08 at GA22 Milford Superior Court.
The Milford Police Department investigated a vandalism complaint on February 17, 2008 involving another Youthful Offender, who was arrested for driving on the Milford Green in the center of town. The youth was operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with passengers in the vehicle spinning the vehicle in circles, and causing damage to the area. The youth claimed he was paying respect to his friends that were killed in a motor vehicle accident one week earlier on February 11th, 2008.
